Graduating ceremonies, not commencement…different things, but still no reason to exclude people based on color

It’s having a unified graduation ceremony for ALL students. The smaller celebrations are ADDITIONAL and those students will take part in the larger one also.

How were the original ceremonies ununifying?

I wonder how much more these minorities have to pay for additional ceremonies. I couldn’t honestly find the answer and I’m curious if they do.

In my experience, graduation isn’t for free. So I have to wonder about the cost.

I also don’t see how it’s exactly unifying. While true, they are not excluding graduates from the main ceremony, whatever individual benefit from having the smaller ceremonies is only presented as an option to minorities.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been to several graduations and would’ve enjoyed a smaller group of graduates but if this is the primary argument for them; why is that exclusive to minority groups?

Could one not argue for smaller ceremonies that they be based on skill or level of academic achievement rather than race or orientation?

I’m genuinely interested but understand if you don’t have the answer or find my questions to be offensive.

That isn’t my intent.

Unified as in there is the one main ceremony that includes ALL graduating students.
The smaller ones are in addition to the main one, so those who can attend any of those also attend the main one first.

The argument Columbia had used was that there are various student associations who have been engaging in this practice, this would be akin to them but focusing on minorties.

I don't know about funding, I didn't bother attending mine (I had dropped in and out of my uni a few times, and by the time I graduated everyone I had known was gone. The ones I met upon that final return were from other years, and the school irked me, so......).
As schools fund student activities, perhaps these are paid for as part of that expense by the school.

In my experience, schools never pay for extracurculiar activities. Especially colleges.

It’s all tied up in some kind of package the parents/students purchase or through fundraising. Colleges, by overcharging tuition, if not packages as well.

The 2 I had gone too had a fee as part of the tuition payment that went to student activities, be it clubs, movies, sports...
