Linking this for everyone. This is a surprisingly straightforward and honest article about where the term “woke” comes from, published in Fox News of all places.

https://www.foxnews.com/us/what-does-woke-mean.amp

Tl;dr — “Woke” is a beautiful piece of African-American vernacular that plainly states the condition of being attuned to one’s surroundings, and in particular, to injustice.

The Fox article seems to take a swipe in labeling woke an “ideological term” at the end, without fully articulating how the Right itself has been the main instigator of that ideological politicization. Delving into the Tucker Carlson, Ron DeSantis, etc. demonization of “woke” is far more than I can expect from Fox News. But it’s always handy to link an item from Fox that is actually decent, maybe it will get them to start to listen.

GD’s comment above was flagged, but I’m ignoring, because it’s already downvoted to oblivion, and leaving it up supplies context.

History lesson: In the 1940s 'woke' was first used by African Americans to literally mean becoming woken up or sensitized to issues of justice. It was used in subsequent decades, it meant "being aware of the truth behind things ‘the man’ doesn’t want you to know”.
"the White liberals aren’t White people who are for independence, who are liberal, who are moral, who are ethical in their thinking, they are just a faction of White people who are jockeying for power the same as the White conservatives are a faction of White people who are jockeying for power. Now they are fighting each other for booty, for power, for prestige and the one who is the football in the game is the Negro. Twenty million Black people in this country are a political football" -Malcolm X

Maybe you're too young or ignorant of history. I get it. Since 2014, the term got co-opted by BLM and is now used as an insult by the right. The left uses terms as insults now, like contard, Trumptard, without once considering how it affects mentally challenged people and their families..

And we all know how much Malcolm X liked white people, liberal or otherwise

Not sure why my comment that explained a part of history was downvoted, that is, unless people who lean left don't like history. I was directed to the origin of 'woke' on a left wing site, so not all left wingers deny history.
