The Soviet Russians decimated Ukraine 1932-33 with the Homolodor. The Nazis retreated with scorched earth policy at end of WWII. Once again Russia is laying waste to people who just want to be left alone.
Ukraine’s border, including Crimea and Donbas, was affirmed by Soviet Russia (under Khrushchev, if I’m correct) in the 1950’s. It was reaffirmed ,including Crimea, by Russia when Ukraine gave up its nukes after dissolution of USSR.

That was all before the US supported Coup. When the government was friendly to Russia and leased Sevastopol base to the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Anyone who thinks the Russians are going to give up Sevastopol, its primary warm water Naval Base is insane. It’s been Russian controlled since 1784 and they will go nuclear before they give it up.

There was a thirty year lease on the naval base at Sevastopol. It was part of dealing with the dissolution of USSR. Well, they did give it up under two agreements.

Yes it was transferred from the Russian Soviet to the Ukranian Soviet during Khrushchev but as they were both Soviets of the socialist republic it was literally symbolic. End result is it doesn’t really matter they will never give it up so are you ready to exchange tactical nukes to take it?

Russia will not be satisfied with just Donbas and Crimea. Part of Georgia has been taken. Probably Belarus next and elsewhere.

It’s all about controlling geographic checkpoints to protect Moscow from invasion. Everything changed when USSR dissolved and no longer had direct control of areas bordering NATO. Then it changed more when former USSR states joined NATO.

Agree that’s what they want, but they got their ass kicked. They might be inclined settle for the status quo pre invasion. They are a nuclear power. They will not be destroyed. Get Peace, build deterrence rebuild Ukraine and give those poor people something more than war. Hope for leadership to change to something more rational.
