People's recollection of past events can vary because the brain can only process and retain so much information at a time. Police asking people what happened in an incident will usually get several different versions. Blue shirt, green shirt, tall guy, short guy, etc... And then there's Napoleon Bonaparte's words, "History is written by the winners". Binary thinking people may be confused by such a comment, but it is perfectly reasonable to question accounts of past events.
