I remember I once read a short story about a zombie apocalypse, except the zombies merged into a hivemind. This meant that they were in reality extremely intelligent, forming clumps by clinging together, a bit like fire ants. They then rolled around after forming a sphere shape, and coordinated to roll across the landscape at great speeds, searching for people.
The zombies also made balloons. I don't remember how, I read it a while ago. These would have tendrils which would reach down and pick people they saw up off the ground.
There were also zombies that disguised as things, which would bite you if you went near them. A bit like a mimic in an RPG, which in hindsight was probably what it was inspired by.
