They barely controlled it, we could have taken more but couldn't give the south more states.

tldr: baja california would be american if we won the war of 1812, thus giving the north more states meaning that the south would take more of mexico

The north didn’t want to give the South more states and the South didn’t want more states that were (at that time) free states (slavery had already been abolished in Mexico).

Plus the residents had brown skin, spoke Spanish, etc.

Gotta love the rare cases when racist/xenophobic arguments win out against imperial expansion

I doubt the racist/xenophobic argument made that much difference, considering the population of Mexico at the time wasn't very large and that the majority of the population lived in the southern mountainous parts of the country.
