66 here. It was all foil on the foil trays and you uncovered the cobbler.

In the '70s they switched to cardboard trays with plastic.

As I remember they were actually a decent meal.

I went in the Army in the early '70s so I know nothing about civilian food much after that.

We may both be right.

I think that you're right; you're supposed to uncover the cobbler so the crust got crisp, and leave everything else covered so it didn't dry out. I think my confusion is the switch over in containers. TV dinners were a growing up thing. Never after leaving home have I eaten one. Frozen beef pies are a different story.
