No, Christopher Columbus did discover the New World. His Latin wasn't very good, but he named the people he discovered 'Indios de puros', which translates to 'children of God'. Kinda tough to exterminate the children of God for religious freedom, so we just use revisionist history here in the good ol' US of A.
