The smart move was to volunteer first. That way a person had way more control over where they were sent and what they had to do. . .or you know. . .checked whatever passed for the conscientious objector option on the forms. . .come to find out the hippies and other idiots at the time made a gigantic mountain out of a mole-hill. The Pentagon was more giving in that regard than what people let on.
