A few months ago I was talking with a younger guy (mid 20s) who is a union carpenter for a state department (DOT basically) who was complaining about gas prices and blaming Biden. I tried to explain as clearly as possible That a president has little to no influence over gas prices. He said, literally, “Biden made it illegal to draw oil in our own country and we have to import all of our oil from Russia.” I was baffled. I tried to explain that gas prices oil prices and all prices are basically associated with supply demand and the demand is going up after cove while the supply is being diminished for a various reasons including the Ukraine war and Russia not being an oil producer from much of the world at this point due to boycotts. Our own oil companies are exporting more oil now for more profits. And we produce more oil than any other country in the world. I ask if we are producing oil than any other country why are our gas prices going up? He just had a blank stare. I said the government could influence prices by controlling the supply which would mean forcing companies that only sell in this country and only selling gas in this country. However that would be Socialism. The other option would be for the government to produce their own oil in federal land and produce gasoline and sell it on the market in our country to citizens at cost for no profit. That would be communism. I said is Socialism something you want or communism? He actually said I’m all for socialism if it gives me lower gas prices. That’s how easily they can become hypocritical.
