Actually not, it was al Queda that non other that Cowboy Reagan paid bin Laden to create, and the US funded various Mujahideen groups to combat the Soviets as well. Some of their members later joined the Taliban, but that didn't emerge till 1994 on its own, with no funding from the US. The Taliban even blew up those two giant Buddha monuments and threatened more to spite us for not giving them an allowance.
I've seen this mixup of both groups with many people before.

Ah, right, it wasn’t the “Taliban” at that point… that said, a lot of the weaponry and the soldiers funded by the U.S. did fall to the “Taliban” later. But because they didn’t yet exist in the 80’s, the U.S. couldn’t exactly have known that it was inadvertently helping create a later problem at the time.

Bottom-line, Rambo III’s reputation survives… sort of!

(Though you’re right that the USA funded what would later become the Taliban (the “mujahideen”, meaning those who engage in jihad) to fight the Soviets, which later backfired spectacularly. And also I really think we need to cut ties with the Saudis, regardless of whether or not they fund terrorism they’re an absolute monarchy which operates as an oppressive dictatorship under Sharia law. We should become energy independent and produce our own energy, by drilling our own oil, investing in renewable energy, etc.)

I agree we should strive for energy independence, in the long term. But as detestable as they are, we can’t simply cut ties with the Saudis without a plan for what comes next.

In addition to oil, some reasons why every American President regardless of party eventually comes crawling back to Saudi Arabia:

—Saudi Arabia holds hundreds, if not thousands, of Islamic terrorists in their cells. Their detention is predicated on American cooperation. What if they… went missing? This is a knife at America’s throat. Or, less melodramatically, “leverage.”
—Saudi Arabia would quickly acquire a new patron state. Russia, China, or both would be more than happy to sell Saudi Arabia the weapons it needs. Is that a good outcome for us?
—Saudi Arabia (and others) are slowly moving toward normalization of relations with Israel. If America pulls the plug, that’s probably out the window.
—There’s “liberal Sharia law” and “fundamentalist Sharia law.” Saudi Arabia and some other Gulf States practice the former, Afghanistan practices the latter. Saudi Arabia is bad, but it’s not Afghanistan bad. American involvement helps keep it that way.

It’s a safe bet that liberal democracy will never take root in Saudi Arabia. The failure of the “Arab Spring” demonstrated that. Given that, a realistic relationship can be focused on narrower goals — like steady liberalization of women’s rights, curbing the worst abuses of the religious police, not murdering journalists abroad, peace with Israel, pressure on Iran, and nuclear non-proliferation.
