Not sleazy, just historical. A more informed population would see socialism, Nazism, communism, fascism and any other form of statism as not just idiotic but seriously dangerous. The early 20th century American Progressives (aka the American left wing) used to openly praise Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin as the men of the future. That is just a historical fact. The fantasy is to continue the lie the Progressives created after the New York Times finally reported just how evil Stalin, Hitler and Mussolini were. That lie put socialism and communism on the left and Nazism and fascism on the far right. The ONLY way that works is if you extremely broaden the scale to most much much much further to the right of Nazism. So much so that all forms of statism just appear on the left.
This nation was founded on individual liberty and very small and powerless government. That is the polar opposite of all forms of statism.
BTW The Tea Party was only concerned about 3 things. The debt, out of control spending and increased taxation. That is why it attracted people from all political parties (except for socialists and communists who believe in massive debt, massive spending and massive taxation). It was really the only time I have ever seen Libertarians condescend to associate with Republicans. Typically Libertarians look down their noses at Democrats but more so Republicans and then most of them turn around and vote Republican.
