Republicans at the time insisted that real conservatives be nominated in reaction to the rulings by Republican Earl Warren's court that reversed Jim Crow laws and ruled in favor of almost all Civil Rights legislation. Brown versus the Board of Education, a key ruling in de-segregating schools caused the John Birch Society to call for Justice Warren's impeachment. Only the most conservative of judges of the day were nominated by Nixon. The people nominated by Trump are radicals, by comparison.
