A right to bear arms, yes. But by whom? When? And where?
Obviously the Second Amendment implies *some* reasonable restrictions, per its “well-regulated militia” clause, unless you believe our Founders intended for clinically insane maniacs to have an absolute right to drive tanks through the crowded streets of lower Manhattan.
Even Ronald Reagan, arch-conservative of his time, looked down upon assault weapons. As did Barry Goldwater and many other Republicans.
The explosion of “gun culture” interest in more, more, more firepower is something that would have been unrecognizable to our grandparents. They recognized that rights came with responsibilities, as did our Founders; our own generation, not so much.
