Right?! I grew up using crickets as fishing bait sometimes. They used to gross me out putting them on the hook but the fish loved them.

Aye . . . I found fish to be more enthusiastic about grass hoppers. But, yes, I also used every type of bait in the world growing up as my uncle was a fishing fanatic. Funny, but I myself haven't fished since my late teens.

Yes, we used crickets for panfish (bluegills, crappies). Actually never used grasshoppers, but I could see how bass or pike would go for them.

It sounds as if you and I are in the same boat (pun intended) - my dad was the fishing fanatic. We'd load up the camper and boat on Thursday so that we could hit the road to the lake as soon as he got off of work on Friday. He'd fish the entire 48 hours until Sunday evening then head home. We never took a trip or vacation either that didn't revolve around fishing. When I turned 16 I discovered that there were much better things to do on the weekend involving cars, girls, and beer. I've fished since then, but only when I go back to visit my brother (lost Dad about 5 years ago, but would go out with him on those visits, very nostalgic). Odd that we're having this discussion on Father's day, but it is what it is.
