When discussing abortion, Republicans like to emphasize the dignity of the fetus, its future, and the joys of parenthood. They are sincere in those things.
Democrats like to emphasize the health and worth of the woman, her choices, and her own future. Most Democrats will also say that they favor late-term abortion bans, or other kinds of restrictions under certain circumstances. They are equally sincere.
If you’re a Democrat, it’s hard to look at a depiction of a developing fetus and not feel emotion — to not hope that, whatever the circumstance, the fetus will be nurtured, born, and grow to live a happy life.
If you’re a Republican, it’s hard to look a raped girl in the eyes and tell her that she must bear her rapist’s child — to be forced to see a part of her rapist in her very own child’s eyes for the rest of her life.
These situations stir the deepest emotions we’re capable of feeling as human beings. Let’s stop shouting for a moment and recognize that.
