I am actually old enough to remember the Soviet Union. It wasn't Russia. It was Russia plus a number of other countries (including the Ukraine) that Russia invaded and subjugated.

Correct. The more formal name was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, U.S.S.R. After the Soviet Union broke up, many of the S.S.R.s became independent.

And Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, the Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia*, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and probably a few more I don't recall off the top of my head.

None of these are parts of Russia.
