Actually might it be quite the strain on the mechanics,, not to mention the eyes, as scrolling up and down with dancing images might do wonders for ye olde motion sickness?
I'm not an expert and this is just a guess, I think the big consideration would be page performance.
I think click to show links are very lean for page performance when an image page is loading. If all the full images were getting loaded, users with slow internet speed would be having a bad time.
Maybe a possible solution is some kind of dynamic way of loading images where comments with images are all click to show at first, then the actual comment images replace the link, after all the comments are in place. That way people with slow internet would have all the comment text in place, could still click within individual comments to see an image. Users with fast internet would have the images there after those images all load at the end.
In the old days, pages had a hard limit of only displaying 500 comments. After that, you could still make comments, they would be in your profile, but were nowhere to be seen on the image page where you were commenting. I first experienced that here: imgflip.com/i/1fori0
The 500 comment limit was removed when the "Show More Comments" button was added. Pretty sure that was implemented to improve page performance.

Actually a lot of scrolling up and down has given me motion sickness (although that's probably a combo of looking at Pinterest and eBay listings before coming here), so while a nice idea, I prefer things as they are. Busting a page so I can go busting my guts aren't high on my priorites.
