Wait a second... a leftist posts a meme with a reasonable message and Octamus Prime is behind it. Enjoy your upvote, but will still be suspicious in the future.

It doesn't matter what word or phrase you come up with, it is eventually going to become a slur. "Intellectually disabled" will just become the new "r" word. It is not the word that is the problem. It is the cruelty of people.

I have yet to hear a replacement that sounds any better. The "r" word literally means slow or late. Disabled means never able. Which is worse? Although "Intellectually disabled" is a little better than "mentally challenged" because a challenge is something that can be overcome and this is actually a disability, meaning they will never overcome this "challenge". But "intellectually disabled" is much crueler than the "r" word. It means never having an intellect or brain dead. People with down syndrome and other mental problems are not incapable of having an intellect. They can think and reason, they just cannot think or reason at the level of the average person.

People who cannot articulate their own opinions will still resort to using whatever the latest euphemism of the day is when arguing with someone else. It will show up here on ImgFlip, without question.

I like your argument for "challenged", but I'd argue that once the most common use of a word is a slur, we have to treat it as a slur. The infamous c-word comes from a Middle English word that means "beautiful" (really! It's in Chaucer), but it is definitely a slur now, and we have to move with the times. Yes, people can be cruel, but we don't have to accede to their cruelty.

And this girl is so amazing! A must read for anyone who doesn't fully appreciate the amazing capability of people with disabilities.

That will cut out 80% of discourse on this site. Reject offense at slurs. Embrace neurodivergence.

I do embrace neurodivergence, and I'm glad to hear you do too. Come join the imgflip.com/m/Neurodivergent stream.

However, respecting people's neurodivergence doesn't mean calling them "morons" or "retards". It means recognizing that everyone has a different array of abilities.

Divergence? Not remotely like separated or segregated?

Well, "neurodivergent" is one of the preferred words in the autism community, to mean people with different sorts of brains from "neurotypical". Different wiring, different strengths and weaknesses.

If we colonize Mars, I'll hope that plenty of engineering-focused neurodivergent people are in on the planning. And on the PR side, maybe some of the people-focused neurodivergent people from the dyslexia side.

I dont want to sound like one of these hate mongers, but I'm old school, having done volunteer work as well as 2 jobs involving people with Autism. That was back when it was still considered a form of "mental retardation" but questioned if it was exactly that but before Asperger's came along.
Then with the advent of Asperger's came Aspie Cool amongst those diagnosed with it, and years later the Aspie Chic we see now, where anyone from the lonely to attractive dullards wanting to pass themselves off as Nerds who are actually closet geniuses taking some online test on FB or Tumblr so they can declare themselves part of the ASD Clique Interantional, which in the meantime became and umbrella for everything BUT actual Autism, as the DSM declared it insn't a thing anymore.

Granted, I may seem Medievel in origin, but you can see where this is going...

It's like Negro > Colored > Black > African American > POC and who knows what is yet to come, when it should just be American. Like the whole 37 genders thing, I can't help wonder if these endless redefining and distilling and branching is just a con created by those wishing to mock or exclude all these people from just being looked at as human beings. Sure, a 19yo may think saying they're ASD is cool, but it won't be as cute when they're 44 and alone and still clearing tables in a cafeteria for a living.

Hey, people do what they want to do with their lives and make themselves feel like they're not creatures to be shunted to the shadows, but veering into cutesy-isms has a bad habit of backfiring. From sectioning themselves off to reactionaries pushing back, it's more a detour into detrimental in the long term than a solution.

I've had the same thought from time to time, and this is how I see it:

It's bad to lump everyone together to the extent that people who are at the ends of the various human continua of diversity feel excluded. ("I have a hard time reading -- I guess I'm just stupid" or "I'm not a 'real boy' or a 'real girl': there's no place for me to be comfortable in my skin", et cetera).

It's also bad to hyper-focus on slicing society into 10,000 tiny cliques ("Welcome to the cis-gendered, bisexual, anarcho-syndicalist, ASD club: everyone else go home", et cetera).

That said, identifying who we truly feel that we are, naming it, and having it acknowledged by other people seems really valuable to a lot of people, especially at certain identity-building stages of development. Can we let people do that, name their granular identities and use that as a way of building respect for everyone's weird uniqueness? Find a happy medium somewhere?

Get back on the euphemism treadmill. In another 5 or 6 years, idiots like you will be looking to ban the next word.

And the fact that I'm not calling you names back somehow confirms this belief of yours. That's tremendously pitiful. I hope you have healthier relationships IRL, but your behavior suggests not.
