I worked for the longest held POW from the Vietnam War for a couple of years. We traveled to events together. He did me the great favor of introducing me to his superior officer, whom I had admired for years. The North Vietnamese liked to trot out POWs to news interviews for PR. This officer beat his own face bloody, the day before his scheduled appearance, so that he could not be used by them. That resulted in much worse beatings on a regular basis than any given to his fellow POWs. These beatings made it impossible for him to stand erect, on his own.
He was crippled and in pain the rest of his life for standing up against people who had total control of his life for seven years, rather than do the PR which would make them leave him alone for a while. He set the bar high for resisting the enemy, which is all that is expected of POWs. I don't expect this level of courage from any other human being. But, I am ashamed at Republicans who lick the Tangerine Tyrant's shoes, daily. If I was you I would avoid making snide "kool aid," remarks.
I remember Stockdale's Paradox, " You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end—which you can never afford to lose—with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be." I am comforted by knowing that all tyrants and their followers lose in the end.
