There is one possible exception that reconciles the contradiction here, and it's the one Rittenhouse and his defense team are running with:
"I feared for my life!"
But no, these are not 5 words that get anyone out of jail free if they kill a man - or in this case, two men, and grievously injuring a third.
The law requires us to ask these questions:
1. Was the person's assertion of a "fear for their life" actually reasonable under the circumstances?
2. Did the person claiming self-defense provoke the attack upon themselves?
That's what the jury's deciding right now. And they have to determine that *each and every* individual counterattack by Kyle Rittenhouse was justified - the first killing, the second killing, *and* the third shot that blew off a dude's arm.
