Look up the date when the prison was opened. Then look up the date that Joe Biden became president. Joe Biden was commander in chief when the gates were opened

Romney’s claim is correct. A February 2020 agreement between the Taliban and the Trump administration called for the release of 5,000 Taliban members who were in Afghan prisons. Afghanistan’s government has said that the 5,000 Taliban prisoners were released. A Congressional Research Service report said the release was completed in September 2020.

Basic timeline:

2020
1. Trump freed 5,000 Taliban as part of a peace deal
2. Most of those Taliban immediately returned to the battlefield
2021
3. We exited Afghanistan
4. Afghan president ran away
5. The Taliban took over
6. They freed whatever Taliban was left
