The pistol was legally owned and illegally carried. He did not have a permit for concealed carry.

Had it been me, knowing that police had shot someone in the back, that people were gathering to protest that; I too would have had a friend buy me an assault rifle, since I was too young; would have had my mommy drive me in to the adjoining state, since I was too young, so I could offer my first aid skills to folks while pointing my assault rifle at them with no intention of accomplishing anything but improving my medical skills.
