You know what's even worse than a lack of representation though? Generic stories that get painted with some LGBTQ after the fact to make it more inclusive so people shut up about it. Like, I don't know, revealing after seven books where it didn't matter one tiny bit, "oh yeah, Dumbledore's gay btw." 😤

Either it is important to the story or shut up. And if it's important to the story you don't need to tell us the first time they open their mouth or even before... We will see it.

I want a story where you only find out that someone is trans after knowing them for 200 pages and we find them crying in the bathroom because a wave of dysphoria hit them out of nowhere. I want a story where you never find out the gender of the main character because nobody asks. I want a story where two characters are struggling in their relationship because one is asexual and the other isn't. I want a story where an LGBTQ person is the antagonist without it being the reason why they're "bad". I want a story where a cishet person is struggling with their personality and an LGBTQ person helps them because they have experience with issues like that.

I think we've had quite enough stories where LGBTQ issues are the central conflict - those are never gonna normalize the topic...

I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!! This is something that I've wanted to avoid. I have one character realize they're trans, and suddenly get body dysphoria out of nowhere. They find some good people though, and they change their name to Steven, nickname Stegg, and are able to get top surgery, and go out shirtless for the first time!

I was more thinking someone post transition who you only get to know as their actual gender. They're happy and just live their life like a normal human being and only very late do you find out that they were assigned differently at birth. Maybe they meet someone who has their deadname or get reminded of a situation from before their transition and it just comes out of nowhere.

A character only just finding out they're trans is making it the main conflict again. I get that those stories need to be written as well - I'm just tired of reading them. 🙈 I want LGBTQ to just be something normal and not the central issue.

I'm not saying you should change your story btw. I'm just saying most LGBTQ books are written for teenagers and for them it IS the central problem because most of them are going through the same stuff right now and they just want to feel seen. But there just isn't anything for adults - they can either read the stories about teenagers and relive their youth or get generic cishet (rarely gay) stories about characters they don't identify with.

haha thx, I plan on the characters all living together at some point, like a makeshift family. They would do everyday things along with doing lgbt related thing (going to pride events and stuff).

In some stories I see lgbtq relationships flexed TOO hard or just out the blue. Like people in the stories be like "sorry dude, I'm gay and I have a boyfriend. We are going to pride parade later and our neighbors dont like us." They just jam all the problems into one and it's just ahxwydhjxauadxs. Then other characters be like "you'll never defeat me! Btw I'm gay. ANYWAYS"
The best representation I see is "hey me and my boyfriend think you should come to a movie, wanna come?"
Just some notes

Yes! I see this too, that why I'm gonna change it. Thanks!

Find some inspiration. Sit in a completely silent room alone and let yourself think. Try writing down ideas for what to do next. Have a break or a snack or watch some tv.

Fellow author here. None of my stuff has been published because I’ve never actually finished a book but are you intending that the one that I’m writing right now will get published even though I’m 11. Try having different characters representing as many of the LGBT sexualities as possible
