We had socialist-like living before modern states seized common land and turned it into privatized property. It has been concluded that inequality is rooted in the institution of private property, which was obviously forced upon us. Currently corporations and politicians in collaboration make all the decisions for us, and we want instead to make decisions for our own lives.
Moreover, socialists don't think they know what is "fair", they believe in giving according to need, which obviously varies per individual.
