Funny thing, if you know the whole story, apparently he's a pretty sympathetic figure. He did some great things for the colonists' side, but kept on getting screwed over. If he hadn't betrayed us, he was in competition with Washington to be our greatest military leader of the time.
That doesn't excuse it, but context is interesting.
