Pretty sure Jeff Cooper was more of an expert than you. He invented modern firearms training. His point was that a pistolero was concerned with self defense. The kinda guys who shot up college campuses were riflemen.
That's still true of 99% of spree shooters.

As for statistics, we live in a country of 330 million. There's under 33,000 shooting deaths per year. Half of those are SUICIDES.
Of the rest, half of those are criminals shot by: cops; other crooks; victims; and abused spouses.
This brings the total down to under 7000 deaths by firearm per year of innocent people.
In a country where 10,000 people die every year due to texting and driving.
