I was going to say guitar because it is so versatile in sound, genre of music and portable too. Although I've learned some piano and hope to teach my kids how to play it.

A full sized piano us probably the best instrument, since you can write music for any style on it. I'm sure you can find a piano version of orchestral music, blues jazz or heavy metal.
But I'd still go with a six string guitar since it's fairly portable and can still be used for a huge variety of music.

True, heavy metal isn't the same on piano though

Interesting, seems kinda limited though

It actually has the second highest range of all string instruments due to its long neck. Since it is a stringed instrument it can really produce any note with the tiniest variation, which only stringed instruments can do. It just generally makes a nice sound as well, along with its range being the closest to the human voice
