Conservative is an absolutely relative term that means different things to each political system. Right now, it mostly means in favor of conserving capitalism over moving to socialism. In an already socialist economy, it could mean the opposite. Back then, conservativism meant wanting to conserve slavery, and it was the progressive republicans that put an end to that. The conservatives and progressives in that system could be defined as regressive in todays system. Confusions like this are why I prefer to call political ideologies by absolute terms, mine being liberal rightism over 'conservativism.'
