You're right that it's apples and oranges, although perhaps not in the way you think.
AIDS is almost completely preventable through a distinct lifestyle choice (sexual promiscuity), which makes it almost completely dependent upon the choice of the subject. In contrast, COVID is not dependent upon lifestyle choice, as one can get it just by being in the presence of an infected person.
The point is that AIDS patients bear much more responsibility for being infected with AIDS than COVID patients do of contracting COVID. However, many judgmental people want to condemn people who get COVID if they are unvaccinated, but would likely never condemn people who get AIDS because of their promiscuous lifestyle.
