Two wrongs never make a right, after all...though they might make Canada vote a little more to the right, haha!

(We all know the second half of that is never gonna happen...)

The article whistlelock linked conveys the same general information, and for free! I doubt you read the Guardian much, I don't either, but this article some additional takes on the matter at large:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/mar/28/pope-no-apology-canada-indigenous-schools-abuse

I for one think Francis is making the right call, though you didn't ask for that opinion, haha.

I'm going to say that the church vandalism is NOT the most horrifying thing in that article. And we've got our own skeletons to match:

The point is that you don't fix a wrong, real, alleged, or perceived, by committing another wrong. That's not justice, it's retribution, and it ONLY makes the situation worse.

Very true. However, it makes me aware of my white middle class privilege and I wonder what I would say if I were a member of a first nation, with all that they have been subjected to.

IGK3777 is blocking me because I talked about how church run schools treated Native children. And discrimination against women.

Indeed.

Your skin color doesn't make something more or less right or wrong. It's superficial, a biological trait. How we act is influenced only by the decisions we make.

Skin color doesn't make things right or wrong, but historical context, well, it contextualizes. The close to 500 years of genocide/ theft/ rapes et cetera against Native people in the Americas are definitely relevant to this story. (A good parallel is the Tuskegee experiments and the fate of Henrietta Lacks being relevant to Black Americans' attitude toward the medical establishment.)

Context is fine. Understanding context is our duty if we want to understand and actually learn from our history. But rage at the past never justifies vindictive action in the present. Believe me when I say I wish the Canadian government and any Catholics who did go along with their abuse would have acted differently. But taking that out on the Church now, acting as if the CCCB and its flock wholly supports what happened and then dealing out vigilante justice, is NOT the way to go about fixing any problems that may remain. It does nothing but poison the situation.
