Probably has something to do with the fact that the new abortion law fails to account for victims of sexual assault and incest. And while these may only make 1.5% of the people getting an abortion, it's also should be understood that only 1 in 4 victims of sexual assault actually report the crime. Meaning, that percentage could be four times as high.
To put that into perspective, there are about 55,000 abortions a year in Texas alone. Meaning hundreds of people a year may now be no longer eligible to get the medical help they need if they are victims of rape or incest. And may be subject to further mistreatment under the law in regards to the public who can now sue victims of rape if they attempt to get an abortion.
That's about 800 people a year in Texas alone.
800.
And it could be four times greater than that. Which puts that number in the thousands.
That's the problem.
Why queer people, you may ask? Well, they're not exempt from being victims of sexual assault. In fact, around 60% of the LGBT community experience some form of sexual assault. It might be easy to forget that rapists don't much care about the sexual preferences of their victim's. The least our representatives can do is not forget about them or marginalize their pain and trauma.
I hope that clears that up for you. Here some additional reading.
