The criminals you are talking about: women who fought back by injuring, killing or firing a warning shot at an abusive partner or spouse, people who used self defense, minors convicted of sex crimes, people found in possession of illicit drugs and people falsely convicted of homicide and sexual assault. Most people in prisons were not "hardened criminals" until they got to prison. Their treatment behind bars turned them against everyone. There, they had access to even more harmful drugs and were exposed to violent and sexually exploitative correctional staff and inmates, plus confined in solitary for almost 24 hours of the day. Of course this is going to produce damaged people.
