Serious answer time! (Gonna try my best to keep it short)
1. Several decades ago, the two major parties were less ideologically “sorted” than they are today. There were “liberals” and “conservatives” in both the Republican and Democratic parties.
2. Politics was more regionalized, less nationalized. So northern Democrats were generally a bit different than southern Democrats.
3. *Southern* Democrats tended to be more anti-federal government, pro-states’ rights, anti-tax, pro-religion, isolationist, anti-trade, anti-immigrant, and of course, pro-segregation.
4. Now, which modern-day political party do the policies in #3 remind you more of? And in what region of the country is that political party most dominant?
I rest my case
