Republican voting restrictions are now going waaay beyond Voter ID, so that’s the first thing.
Bear in mind, voting is a fundamental right — most other things in life aren’t.
Poll taxes are unconstitutional, and a photo ID requirement is effectively that since they cost time and money to get. Most people have one already, but some don’t. When we’re talking about rights that are fundamental, that means we must deliver them for *everybody* who is eligible. “Most people” isn’t good enough. We have to think about the lowest of the low. The destitute. The homeless. The disabled. The immobile. The imprisoned. So, yes. Photo ID can be unduly burdensome.
Still worried about fraud? Thankfully, we also have this nifty thing called “voter registration” that makes voter ID rather redundant.
Still worried about fraud? Ask the person their name and address when they vote. See if those details match the info provided on the voter registration. Boom! Done!
Still worried? Introduce other additional verification measures like a password or passcode. Another thing that would cost no money.
There are so many other ways to combat “fraud” than to insist on the narrow set of things Republicans focus on, which are always more burdensome than the alternatives.
Still worried about “fraud,” despite the fact it’s so minimal across the country that it doesn’t stand a prayer of tipping even a local election, let alone a national one?
Then you’re just a brainwashed Republican who bought Trump’s “Big Lie” hook, line, and sinker.
