Fun Fact: Robert E Lee didn't hate slaves, in fact he freed them by buying them and setting them free. The only reason why he joined the Confederates was because Virgina joined them and he didn't want to betray it (originally he was going to be neutral)

Not glorifying the CSA FYI

Fun fact.. he fought FOR IT. and KILLED AMERICANS to save it.|

Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth. This truth has been slow in the process of its development, like all other truths in the various departments of science

So does this change a single thing about the past?

Yep, it finally puts it where it belongs... in a warehouse or museum, not as a reminder to the oppressed that the "south will rise again".

Okay I understand the reasoning behind it. I get it. But shouldn’t we remember our past mistakes so we don’t make them again?

Yep, that is what museums and history books are for.

But I’m not seeing these things going into museums. I’m hearing about people trying to erase the bad part of our history and pretend that it never happened.

No what you are hearing about is people trying to tell the 'actual' history and not the whitewashed one that places traitors and proslavers on pedestals, guess the fact their are no statues to Hitler or Mussolini means folks are trying to 'erase' that history too huh?

Must we be so negative? Okay, so are kids still being taught the real history and not the revised version? I know my kids are but they go to a pretty exclusive school. But what about public school? I don’t care about taking down statues as long as the history isn’t erased along with them.

There is nothing "positive" about putting traitors and slavers on a pedestal. No one is erasing anything by removing them. Again its the same as having a statue of Hitler. Time to stop telling people that they were some sort of 'heroes' by having the statues... they were not.

Its also a rallying cry and physical place for the still messed up in the head types to rally. Buh Bye statues. Now we can keep moving forward.

Well believe it or not, I can get behind that argument because the Hitler analogy does make sense to me. Statues are just that, they are supposed to be a memorial to a person or event. Not every person and every event deserves to be immortalized because maybe the person didn’t do anything positive, or the event was negative. I can think of a few people who left a bad taste in my mouth who are immortalized in bronze. Let’s take those too, no?

Okay so if people still remember Lee and others what good does it do? It's just a lifeless statue that can't say anything that you don't like

A statue is more than its material content; statues carry the power of symbolism. By placing a statue at a public site, viewers are expected to honor and respect the person represented in larger-than-life-size bronze. ... Symbols matter to the way we perceive others

Well, there you have it then. Some history is worth putting on pedestals, and some of it belongs in museums and books.

Well, seems the Native Americans (the ones here before the Europeans) dont like being reminded of the genocide committed against them, so, I am cool with it. - Thanks for the heads up though, I was unaware there was an issue there. Not for me to judge, L&C did nothing for me anyway.

Did nothing? DID NOTHING FOR YOU, WHY ARE YOU BEING SELF CENTERED, THEY EXPLORED THE ENTIRE FREAKING LOUISIANA TERRITORY FOR THE COUNTRY WITH A SMALL GROUP BY FOOT AND HOURSE AND WHAT DO YOU MEAN L/C COMMITED GENOCIDE AGAINST THE NATIVES WHEN THEY WERE HELPING THEM A TON LIKE SACAWAGA
0 ups, 3y,

The did nothing for 'me'. And no they were not 'helping' the natives, not even Sacagawea. She died at 25, from a European disease and was a slave bought by a fur trader named Toussaint Charbonneau - LC was were simply scouts for the eventual genocide of the natives... its not much to celebrate.

some were. Does not mean LC should be put on a public pedestal. You want to see it, go to a museum where they belong.
0 ups, 3y
Okay so if you were to get a public statue of yourself in your area would you tell them to take it down
