I don't get why everyone is so shocked it happened in the first place. They built a multi-story complex... on ever eroding sand... next to a huge body of water... in an area known for colossal storms. Who could've seen this coming?!

Yeah, and that huge body of water is SALT water, salt being one of the most corrosive substances there is. If you doubt that, just look at my van, its original owner was in Vermont for a few years and it's got rust growing in several spots.
