The concept of patriotism has been so corrupted by self-styled “patriots” that it’s worth recalling what it actually is and isn’t.
Patriotism is NOT yelling about how much you’re a patriot even as you wave a Confederate flag with one hand while you’re bopping police officers on the head with a fire extinguisher held in the other as you break and enter the U.S. Capitol searching for the Vice-President to hang.
Patriotism IS: Putting your country’s needs ahead of your own. Putting your countrymen ahead of yourself. Asking not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.
The governing mood of the Republican Party places the individual front, center, and only. It basically says, in its rawest expression: “F**k society. F**k the government. F**k paying taxes. F**k the historically disenfranchised. F**k those currently being discriminated against. F**k anyone trying to enter our country. F**k all those other people who can’t get by. I got mine and I’m going to sit on my porch with a shotgun for anyone who tries to take it.”
In propaganda terms, the GOP tries desperately to cover over this anti-patriotic and anti-social outlook with ostentatious symbolism (flags, eagles, military hardware, etc.), but the rest of us aren’t fooled.
