This explains why some Trump supporters aren’t white, or aren’t Christian, or weren’t born here, or aren’t sexist or homophobic.

But identification with at least *one* of these bigotries is strongly predictive of alignment with Trump and the modern-day populist-right Republican Party that he’s molded in his image.

Support for Israel often goes hand-in-hand with white Christian nationalism.

There are also rabid anti-Semitic white nationalists who support Trump (like that guy at the Jan. 6 riot with the “Camp Auschwitz” t-shirt). You just never know.

Sloth outlined some good reasons. Some folks, like myself, support Israel because there should be a Jewish state in the Middle East. Be the current one as it may, Israel's the best we've got right now. I'd rather any problems it has be fixed internally and peacefully than support violent actors trying to subvert and overthrow the country.

Some of them think Israel’s founding was a divine prophecy fulfilled.

More cynically, some of them may want Jews to leave and emigrate to Israel. Or, they might hate Muslims more than they hate Jews.

This analysis also explains Trump’s rise to the top of the GOP from out of nowhere, with no prior political experience, on the back of two separate but closely-related conspiracies about Barack Obama: (1) That he wasn’t born in the U.S.; (2) That he was a Muslim.

Of course Barack Obama was actually born here and is a Christian. But that’s not the point — the baseless conspiracies nonetheless served to “other” Obama among the Republican base along two separate axes.

Obama being black was bad enough for the white supremacists. But once Trump pushed the connection of Obama being an immigrant (activating native-born supremacists) and being a Muslim (activating Christian supremacists), then a much larger segment of the GOP base was riled up.

***This*** is what set Trump apart from his more “mainstream” but in many cases actually more ideologically conservative primary opponents in ‘16. Trump’s willingness to “go there” with the bigoted and totally made-up identity politics attacks. To cajole “real America” into believing that Obama was “not one of them” on multiple levels.

Righties are right now doing the ***same exact*** stuff with Kamala Harris — calling into question her immigrant background, her “true” race, and her sexual history. I haven’t heard of any attacks on her religion yet, but I would bet they are in the works.

Well, people don't hate Hindus as much as Muslims. Then again, with a Caribbean background she might be accused of voodoo--seen by Americans as a series of stereotypes like Islam is.

It's not that I really like Trump...I don't and haven't since the Republican primaries way back when...it's just the other side has a lot of folks very vocally in opposition to a lot of things I hold dear. I can't support that.

Same with me and the GOP. I hold the average American worker dear. I hold education for everyone dear. I hold healthcare for everyone dear. I hold better living conditions for everyone dear. I hold our national infrastructure dear. I hold fair and equitable tax laws dear. The GOP doesn't.

EVERY trump supporter i have ever seen live or on the internet has 1 or more of those attributes. Think about anyone you know that likes trump. They fit this description. You never see rational, intellectual, empathetic, non-bigoted people that are trump supporters. There are reasons why.

I know at least one. Dunno enough about IGK to say if he's a narcissist, but we should acknowledge narcissism is a scale on which everyone registers
