Currently there are over 3.5 million deaths reported worldwide, and that is with mitigations. So, actually I don't know of a more deadly flu variant.

SARS was more deadly from a case fatality rate perspective (~9.6% vs ~1.9%), but COVID has proven far more infectious and has killed more people.

The population in 1920 was a quarter of what it is now and the Spanish flu killed 50 million so it was a bit worse.

Spanish Flu - good example. However, I would argue that we are reacting how we are now in part because of what happened then.

This 2007 study analyzed peak rates and what mitigations were implemented during the Spanish Flu in different cities. https://www.pnas.org/content/104/18/7582

Many of the countermeasures they looked at are the same ones being implemented now.

And in the beginning, I was all for it. Onboard 100%, because we didn't know how bad it was going to be, and at that point I had no reason to suspect we had a Tuskegee situation on our hands. As a conspiracy theorist, I'm ashamed to admit that lapse in skepticism.

At this point, I wonder what the actual numbers were and have been(to what extent have they been augmented)

I'm not ruling out a global false flag, the tactical release of a low yield bioweapon as possibly a method of culling the elderly population, or if that was merely a cog in the kinetic machine as to destabilize the global infrastructure. They are said to be fond of eugenics and depopulation.

But yes, at the beginning I took countermeasures, some called drastic.in the case of my grandparents. But even then I expected nothing of anyone else. I didn't panick but, thankfully we didn't have need, but I understood those who did.

Skepticism is good, but it has to go somewhere.
The issue I have with the idea of the numbers being augmented is that you aren't talking about the CDC lying. You are talking about the medical examiners and the like who sign off on death certificates the country over lying. And then the world over.

I don't believe in in Conspiracy theories unless there is some evidence to go with the suspicion. Now, conspiracy (lower case c) in the legal sense - sure.

So, might a lab in china have been studying the virus and accidentally released it sure? Covering that up isn't a grand conspiracy - its covering your tracks.

The thing is, looking back, Democrats were getting wound up to blow this out of proportion and to try and ride Covid to election. They were just as surprised as anyone else that it actually turned out to be as bad as it has been.

Eugenics - I think there would be easier ways.

Tuskegee - I fail to see the parallels.

I think if you look at the case fatality rate in places like Italy when it first hit when they blew through hospital capacity you'll see what I mean when I say this was a better case - not best case, but significantly better as I don't recall any reports of any place truly not having beds available for people who needed them.

Countermeasures weren't federally mandated -states chose how to implement. Most states failed to learn lessons from other states and delayed closings until they already had too much 'momentum'. By the time they locked down, there were people infected at an exponential rate and hadn't shown symptoms yet. Given the incubation period, if you stop the spread entirely, you will continue to see numbers climb for a short time while existing infections run their course.

Tuskegee bring the medical community purposely lying to the general population

I would argue that wasn't the general population and was a relatively small group of doctors. Combine that with racial attitudes and there we are. Not to minimize it, but to go from that to this would be a huge expansion.

For me, it's just more evidence for likelihood

By far worse. But even in the 70s and 90s there were bad strains, that caused s lot of deaths. The biggest red flag is the medical community purposely fudged the numbers to make the death toll look higher. When H1n1 or hanta killed you, it killed you, they didn't chalk up every death, like car crashes, or shark attacks as they've done from the start with corona

Good points. Also during the Covid-19 pandemic our CDC and medical establishments decided that all of a sudden ALL FORMS OF INFLUENZA infections and deaths were . . . automatically Covid-19, period.

False, period.

That's not how it works. They do use any positive test for the daily numbers and trend analysis, because getting official cause of death takes time. The final numbers are based solely on death certificate data which is determined by a medical examiner or equivalent.

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid_weekly/index.htm

Note: Provisional death counts are based on death certificate data received and coded by the National Center for Health Statistics as of May 26, 2021. Death counts are delayed and may differ from other published sources (see Technical Notes). Counts will be updated every Wednesday by 5pm. Additional information will be added to this site as available.

All I've ever heard is anecdotal 'my friend died while base jumping and they said covid!", but if that was widespread, it would be incredibly easy to prove.

I know you're not talking about H1N1 because that DID cause a mass shutdown - just 100 years ago.
