Power plants have a constant operating point, making it much more efficient than your car engine which can operate at a range of different revolutions per minute. It is impossible to design an internal combustion engine with the same efficiency as even a coal power plant.

It would be nice if the coal power plant could be replaced with something better as well, but electric cars are definitely a cut.

The cleanest and most reliable is nuclear. Other than Chernobyl, Three-Mile Island and the Fukushima earthquake failure, it is essentially an inexhaustible supply. Part of the problem is adding people to the equation. Homer Simpson is an incredibly accurate metaphor.
