Shrek good question | image tagged in shrek good question | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
I’ve been politically interested since high school, but I never really self-described as “liberal” until relatively recently. I voted McCain in ‘08. Johnson (Libertarian candidate) in ‘12 and ‘16. I was no fan of Hillary and I reacted with amusement to Trump’s upset win in ‘16 the way one would react to a thrilling Super Bowl game.

But I voted for Biden in ‘20 — and it was the most fervent vote I’ve ever cast in my life. Trump’s presidency opened my eyes to a lot of things. I thought this New York billionaire just wanted to play a demagogue on TV and on Twitter and wouldn’t actually govern that way. Boy, I was wrong. (I don’t mind admitting when I’m wrong).

Long story short, I’m politically fluid and I don’t play for teams. I would like to live in an America where both parties could genuinely compete for my vote, the way it used to be, but that’s no longer the case and I don’t think we’re going to have that again any time soon.

Same here but I voted for Obama in 08. Palin was too stupid to be one McCain away from president. Also she’s kinda the root of the idiocy we see now with Trump and his supporters. Palin and Michelle Bachman were the original morons of the right that validated stupidity as an embraced quality of the right. Batshittery was approved because opinions were “rights” and therefore true somehow.

Sarah Palin Masked Singer | image tagged in sarah palin masked singer | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
Right. As someone already predisposed to McCain in '08 I remember feeling excited about the Palin pick for some reason. First female VP, that would have been pretty cool. It was clever in that way in taking part of the novelty of Obama's candidacy away from him: Either ticket would have been "making history."

But in retrospect, yikes. Yes, Sarah Palin and her racist smear campaign against Obama and winking at conspiracy theories and stuff was 10000% a canary in the coal mine for what the GOP would become later under Trump.

But NOBODY saw that coming at the time. Nobody. They thought she was just a little dopey, mostly. The people warning about Palin's racist dogwhistles and such seemed a bit hypersensitive at the time. No more.

Palin herself became a punchline, but the bigoted Trumpist bonfire rages on.

She was a proto Trump: an “outsider”, not a “real” politician, wasn’t educated, didn’t care. Didn’t keep up with reality and facts…also didn’t care. Enough mouth breather troglodytes supported that ideology along with the tea party that sprouted up after it to take over the GOP with a platform of ignorance, narcissism and latent, if not blatant, racism. Flash forward to 2016 and it culminates in Trump.
