TOTAL BS ........ McDonald's has been around since 1954. If your scenario was true, there wouldn't be another restaurant in the world other than McDonald's. McDonald's is just one choice among many. Some people like McDonald's, some don't. When people want a quick, simple meal they go to fast food places. When they want a more complete meal they go elsewhere. As a matter of fact, a person can get a better meal for about the same amount at many chain full service restaurants these days as they can at McDonald's.

"McDonald's has been around since 1954. If your scenario was true, there wouldn't be another restaurant in the world other than McDonald's"

the environment for local business was very different in the 50's. luckily, there was an entire generation ready to eat up every lie the government and corrupt politicians spouted to enable an entire group of monopolies

"McDonald's is just one choice among many"

in over 20,000 cities worldwide, making it one of a few choices. it shares this with wendy's and burger king, and almost nothing else

"When people want a quick, simple meal they go to fast food places."

if only americans learned how to cook, our economy needn't be scared of minimum wage. meanwhile, europe and asia have better min wage policy with no problem. because Mickey D's prioritizes making money over catering, of course they'll find cheaper alternatives. any company that prioritizes quality over quantity, however, won't. food made by robots will never be as good. hope you enjoy a nice HAL9000-prepared hot dog

Please 'O Brilliant One, tell us how the govt created McDonald's, etc and turned them into a monopolies. What lies did they tell, that mesmerized us into buying Quarter Pounders, Whoppers, Singles or a Bucket of KFC Chicken ? Were people handcuffed & forced to eat Quarter Pounders ? The McDonald brothers and Ray Kroc, Colonel Sanders, Dave Thomas, et al, came up with a idea and a product that Americans wanted. Nobody was forced to eat at any of these new "fast food" restaurants. Americans had new found wealth and freedom of movement after the war and exercised their right to eat where ever they wanted to eat.
Try to stay on subject.... the meme was about the US Federal minimum wage, not about the fact that people in Tibet might not have a plethora of restaurant choices. I'm sure that keeps all you social justice warriors up at night worrying about Tibetans lack of restaurant choices, but it doesn't worry the rest of us at all. I doubt that the Tibetans worry about it either.
Americans, with the possible exception of the last two generations, know how to cook. They choose to eat out much more than previous generations because we have more disposable income, which sometimes comes from the fact that the female matriarch also works outside the home, therefore allowing less time to prepare meals. We are a much more mobile culture nowadays with children involved in sports and other activities which again pulls parents out of house and leaves less time for preparing full course meals.
And lastly dipshyt, nobody claimed that "fast food" was better than home-cooked food or food at a higher class restaurant. It's called FREEDOM OF CHOICE. People can go where ever they want to eat if they've got the moolah. If prices get too high, Americans will indeed turn back to more home cooked food, which ..... wait for it ........... will result in job losses in all restaurants. And the same effect will be felt in all small businesses. It's called PRICES, SUPPLY & DEMAND - Economics 101. Prices get too high, demand will drop off and workers will be laid off.

the point i'm making is that mcdonald's warps the standards for minimum wage by being subsidized

"If prices get too high, Americans will indeed turn back to more home cooked food, which ..... wait for it ........... will result in job losses in all restaurants"

eyyyy when you conveniently forget about urban, local, authentic restaurants

You keep saying McD's is subsidized .... please explain how McD's is subsidized ??

And if you re-read my comment above, I point out the fact that you can get a decent meal in a lot of local and some chain sit-down restaurants for just about what a combo meal costs at McD's... at least you can if you don't live in a major metro area.

That aside, unless you're living in a high-priced metro area where the min wage being paid is considerably higher than the current Fed minimum, raising the min wage to $15/hr will cause immense harm to small business and restaurants.

"please explain how McD's is subsidized"

the government gives McD's free money

"raising the min wage to $15/hr will cause immense harm to small business and restaurants."

McD's has caused more harm to small businesses than min wage increase ever has. local businesses are already not the cheapest, and despite how well they do, McD's gets an advantage over them by being cheaper. and anything that seems like an expense to McD's is replaced with something cheaper. McD's kills more jobs and business than it provides. that's not free-market capitalism; that's a monopoly

Using an article from Salon to justify your ignorance ... baaaaaaahhhhhhhh. I know you love Bernie and his socialism, but are you really this dumb ???
Over 50% of small businesses don't offer health insurance to their employees and the number is much higher in restaurants. Most are part-time employees working 30-hr or less per week. Most of these jobs, especially at FFR, were never intended to be the prime "family-supporting" jobs. They are LOW SKILL manual jobs that were intended to be "temporary" jobs for teenagers or someone trying to pickup extra cash. Now people are trying to use these LOW SKILL jobs as permanent jobs....much of this because (1) they can't pass a drug test to be employed at higher paying jobs (2) they have no skills that are marketable for a higher paying job. Larger businesses/industries only have a limited need for LOW SKILL manual labor type employees, so these jobs are flooded with applicants. If you want better paying jobs, excell in school, stay off drugs and don't get married and start a family until you can provide for them. It is not society's fault if you failed miserably in those three areas.
To use your strawman argument that because some employees are on Medicaid or Obamacare that makes the business subsidized by the govt, is totally ludicrous.

And your last statement is pure gibberish. McD's is simply one choice among many that most communities have for places to eat and as I stated previously, you can buy a meal at most small restaurants for the same price of a combo meal at McD's, so where's the monopoly?. Nobody is forced to spend their money at McD's .... it is simply freedom of choice, which I know you socialists hate. If I want a steak, I don't go to McD's. If I want seafood, I don't go to McD's. If I'm in a hurry and want to eat my meal as I drive or take it back to work, then I grab something at McD's. Obviously, you don't have a clue what a real monopoly is or what free-market capitalism looks like.

So democratic of all of the FLORIDA TRUMP SUPPORTERS TO VOTE FOR A STATE MINIMUM WAGE OF $15 AN HOUR. I guess trump's supporters REALLY HAVE NO IDEA of how an economy works, huh? 👍

Before you start in with the defense for cheetoh, I want you to stop to think how the State of Florida can vote for Trump (majority vote), and on the same ballot, vote for a $15 minimum wage hike(majority vote).

Obviously, math was not your forte in school. If ALL the Trump supporters had voted for it, I'm sure the vote total would have been near 100% instead of the 60.2% it got, which was barely enough to pass. Since Trump only got 51.2%, it would seem that only about 11% of the people who voted for Trump voted for the $15 minimum wage. Maybe a remedial math class would help you.

No, you proved my point. Not a single trump supporter should have voted that way, if they understand the economy of entry level wages.
