as a liberal I think "capitalism" is the boogeyman of the left. There are various forms of capitalism and ours allows for the exploitation of workers. Other countries have better forms of capitalism that help protect the workers. Still capitalism. Just not as horrible as ours.

This is why unions have to exist. The actual “laws” aren’t/weren’t there to protect the workers interest so the unions have to step in to allow the workers to bargain/negotiate to balance the power.

Thank unions for 40 hour work weeks, minimum wages (they’d pay you nothing if they could,) worker safety, child labor laws, etc.

Yeah I'd be ok with that too but typically EVERYONE at the workplace that do the same type of job benefits from the union negotiations. If workers had the option to opt out of a union membership/dues and deal directly with the employer that would be another story. But it seems it's all or nothing. And workers have the right to find a different job. Those pre unionization negotiations are there to set up the stage for the workers that are there at the time. Newer workers can opt to NOT work at a union shop when they are looking for a job. Typically they take the job anyway b/c the non-union shops have worse pay and benefits.
