Round the late 1970s Carlin did this elongated Baseball vs Football comparison bit when hosting SNL.
Interesting comparisons, but not quite funny.
Then he did it on Carson.
Then Letterman.
In the ensuing decades unto his death, I've not seen him do anything but that piece, unchanged, on various talk shows. Nothing. No new material. Zip.

Made a bit splash back in the day with his list of ERMEGAWSH! 7 naughty words you can't say on tv which probably was funny for stoned hippies because that's how tv was then and constipated. Golly gee.

It's like Geraldo Rivera with his Willowbrook story. That thing catapulted him into sainthood with those involved in the field of the mentally compromised. But all's he's done since then was a pale shadow to the point of a joke, cringe even.
Carlin is the Rivera of comedy.

That's what I was thinking. I never saw his 7 words skit but it seems like people giggling just cuz muh dirty word.

I saw his political weatherman bit. I'm sure I didn't get alot of the references from the 70's but he seemed mediocre even with that being said.

It wasn't even like he said it on some live broadcast and someone was asleep at the console so it aired and...

Not even a Charles Rocket moment (which was probably before your day).
He was the blazing breakout star of the 2nd SNL cast, and on the season finale, they ended with a spoof on Who Shot Jr with Rocket getting shot and he goes, "Yeah, and I want to know who the f*** did it!" and it slipped through. That ended his career, blacklisted, done. I saw him do standup opening for some band at this ourdoor Dr Pepper Concert at Pier 84 series they were having.
And that was the last I heard on him.

With Carlin, it's that smug Dick Cavett but with a Friday night 420 sess *wink* for that Downtown club cred. He said stuff like it was important, some amazingly astute observation, and the crowd was just as smart as he was for appreciating it. Almost.

I remember reading about Rocket harrassing John Lennon at his house. Man, it was dire for SNL at the start of the 80's. But yeah, that type of slip up live was career death at the time.

Funny you mention Cavett. Been watching a bit lately. He really does have this weird smug quality about him. Completely square. Yet he did some great work with his interviews, he let them speak but there's this strange cringe I can't put my finger on. Like a self depricating guy who is actually arrogant as hell, maybe.

Dang, my memory is shot, don't recall that. Sadly, becausae I was no Lennon fan.

Catch Cavett with Eddie Murphy. He went on with this weird submissive thing that went on for months or so. Was really weird. Like, "Golly, gee, look at me, we're pals," but totally beta to Murphy. Was such cringe, I kept wondering if it was an extended gag.

I think he was on his driveway with a loudspeaker yelling at Lennon inside during one show.

Yeah, I can see that.

hahaha, that was great.

I use "Lennon" to describe arrogant self-aggrandizing intolerent overly aggressive/bullying types like Sting or Bono or Sean Penn who miss their own point.

Sting just seems pompous but Bono and Penn are insufferable. And I was a huge fan of both.

He was the last I added, and I hesitated, for he didn't seem overtly aggressive. Just still bugs me when a once great band that had fun turned into "Sting and the Police" and he started parading that Amazonian Chief aropund like he was his pet macaw.

Fan of which both, the latter two?

Other than that snide cackling chummying up one in Carlito's Way, when was the last time Penn cracked - and I do mean cracked - a smile?

I think Sting's a talented guy but yeah, I had a drummer buddy that loved Copeland and I'd hear stories about how the two would fight. Amazonian chief? I missed that but sounds about right.

Yes, big U2 fan growing up. Thought Penn was a great actor and director. Penn is obnoxious but Bono takes the cake. Self important windbag. Save the environment... just after our worldwide tour with 27 trucks and cargo planes transport the elaborate stage and effects!

He's always been pretty dour.

Copeland was awesome. Stewart too.

Yeah, after he went solo, he started on this "Save the Amazon" crusade,

I saw him on Tough crowd, like some preachy burned out boomer. Idk, again, no laughs. Tho Colin Quinn and his incoherent mumbling wasn't exactly riveting or understandable, alot.

Yeah, Quinn's stranger-sitting-next-to-you-at-the-bar-ranting-into-his-mug-of-Bud schtick is so lame.

It did have some good guests, like Patrice O'Neill and Greg Geraldo.

I never watched it.

Hey, did you know Geraldo had passed away? (R.I.P.)

The sjws would have a fit today over it.

Yeah, awhile back. Tragic story. Absolutely brilliant guy tortured by drugs. RIP

I just found out a couple of weeks ago, but was reading something else and it was a clickbait thing that you have to go through a gazillion pages of other stuff to get to so I didn't look

Wow, I didn't see that coming. But I knew he did have many good takes.

Yep no problem I do believe that you can find that bit on YouTube but don't quote me on it

ooooooooh that's a great one

Yeah, plenty if you are smart enough to keep up. And his Football baseball routine evolved over the years and improved, sad you only saw that part of his repertoire vagabond. It is like a hit song by a musician and yes, people want to hear that song when they go to the concert...duh. Maybe you should get out more
