Most of the founding fathers were Deists (look it up if you don't know). But then again, the people already here before the Europeans encroached were not.
It is the most religious developed nation, so religious that there is still a problem with the seperation of the church and the state (and I'm not talking about the bible during inauguration.)

Very simple. So that the government can care about things like crime without having to consider the churches approval, as well as making an environment where people can believe any religion freely (basically part of the 1st Amendment)
