Marriage isn't just a piece of paper and a party, It's a holy covenant between a man and a woman, to love and support each other through both rugged mountains and pleasant valleys in life.

what about two women or two men
1 up, 4y
Though, true, same sex marriage is starting to become more relevant, for centuries and generations of human history, it's always been a man and a woman so it's only natural to say "a man and a woman" or "groom shall wed his wife"

and no, homophobia doesn't mean you're scared of the gays.

Well, etymologically speaking, it does, but I know what you mean.

Not supporting is not being afraid.

There is a difference between hating or being scared of gay people and believing that a gay marriage is not a sacred covenent.
2 ups, 4y
Then it's not a holy covenant. Then it is just a piece of paper and a party.

Here's a kinda random question- what church do you go to? Your beliefs sound a lot like what my church teaches.

The confession my church used is the 2LBCF. I'm not comfortable sharing the exact location of my church, because I live near it. I hope you understand.

Oh, absolutely. I meant something like you gave me, not any address or something

In the legal sense, you're absolutely correct...well at least the piece of paper part. In the spiritual sense, it's a pledge to each other and a bond. I actually feel that people can be married without ever actually getting the piece of paper. Matter of fact, that actually exists as "common law marriage". This is the way I feel it should be, and not in the legal sense. I don't think government should get involved in marriage period.

there are legal benefits to marriage.
1 up, 4y
There are also legal disadvantages to marriage. Trust me, I'm married :)

Also, I'm not an advocate for not getting married, I fully support it. I just don't think the government should have anything to do with it.

I agree

Why is that? Legal benefits help motivate people to get married, which is better for their kids and society in general. As a married man, you know better than me
1 up, 4y
Namely taxes...also health insurance if offered by employers. In general, being married isn't a bad thing, the good far outweighs the bad! I also look at all the past debates surrounding gay marriage. If the government wasn't involved, gay marriage would have never been an issue if left to the individuals involved. Most of that debate was applicable to whether it should be legal or not, and any religion that opposes it was dragged through the mud over it. If it were a personal choice and not a legal thing, then everyone is free to do as they please. Of course I have my own beliefs about the sanctity of marriage, but for the most part that is irrelevant to this thread.

We don't say a birth certificate or will is just a paper because they are a record of an important event in someone's life, the value is not on the ink on parchment but what it signifies. The same with marriage. If you only see it as a paper and a party it's not going to last very long. People can get married without a certificate and reception. It's the willingness to vow to stay together a pledge of love (real love not just feelings) for life, through thick and thin. You will only get out of marriage what you put into it. :)

Idk, it’s just betting half your stuff you won’t break up

people get married because they think that they found the ¨one¨ and will love them forever but the truth is love does not last forever and is a temporary thing which most people don't understand human beings are not supposed to be married anyway or be monogamous humans were designed to live in groups and just f**k each other whenever we know this because the human dick is shaped in a way that pulls back or sucks back any other sperm that is traveling to the females eggs to give the last guy who had sex with her more of a fair start at having kids but the whole idea of marriage was created from the view that polygamy is bad or sinful so people get married because of our ancestors fear of polygamy that became cultural norms that are still around today

I see where you're coming, but I disagree(except for the historical parts, I found those to be decently accurate). I personally don't agree with a single man having multiple wives or fertilizing several women because one, it's against God's word to sleep/sex with a woman(or man, depending on gender) before marriage. And yes, love does last forever: friendship, romantic, objects, those types of love do last forever, or as long as we are in our mortal bodies. I'm only 15 but I've seen several people who love one another very much that if they were only acting, they'd deserve to go on Broadway. So, all in all, I just don't think you believe in love and what it's capable of.
