this movie was crazy -- and the official target was Obama-voting northern white liberals, so I assume it's one even the politics crowd can get behind

though of course it's really about all white Americans

Blazing saddles was not sanitized. The racist characters were racist. The black character won the town over, not because racism was absent, but because he proved that the racism was wrong. The protagonist succeeded in spite of racism, not due to its magical absence.

Richard Prior who co-wrote it convinced Mel Brooks he had to use that word or it would lose its message. Mel Brooks was hesitant even in the 1970s for the word to be used.

True, they just hooted like gorillas when they wanted someone to stop talking.
