How Trump's coup was lost.

How Trump's coup was lost. | So, what thwarted Trump’s slow motion, in-plain-sight attempt at a self-coup? Fortunately, there was pushback from all the key institutions you need for a coup. First, the military and other parts of the government resisted Trump’s efforts to personalize their power. Second, major media outlets reported the facts truthfully. Social media outlets flagged the president’s lies about the election—albeit belatedly—and Twitter and Facebook ultimately cut off his accounts. Third, the judiciary and courts held firm. “Trump judges,” all the way up to the Supreme Court, respected their oath of office and rejected the president’s appeals to overturn legitimate election results. Fourth, state and local government officials refused to be swayed. They repeatedly called out the lie that Trump had won the election. Finally, in the legislature, the vice president performed his constitutional role, as did the Republican Senate majority leader and most of the Senate. The only two elements that rallied behind the president’s coup attempt were the handful of senators and the majority of House Republicans and his popular support, in the form of an insurgency—the mob that stormed the Capitol. | image tagged in blank white template, coup, election 2020,2020 elections, trump is an asshole, trump is a moron | made w/ Imgflip meme maker

It's too easy to see how this could have gone the other way. I'm not feeling safe yet.

If any of these institutions had been more pliable, it would have been a lot scarier. From the top to the bottom, committed Trump loyalists could have severely gummed it up.

But they all held, pretty much. Except for the most craven slice of Senators and the MAGA mob itself.

I can’t believe I’m going to quote (or at least paraphrase) him for something beyond “I’ll be back” or “Hasta la vista, baby,” but Arnie nailed it: sometimes you have to lose or almost lose something to appreciate what you have and that one’s resolve, like a sword, is tempered and strengthened by heating, pounding, cooling, and repeating.

TDS is clearly a mental illness possessed by anyone who is ignorant enough, or, to a lesser-extent, power-hungry enough, to willfully participate in the antics an ass clown like Donald Trump or his klan promote.

I must confess I’ve lost my train of thought became I’m ironically watching Jojo Rabbit for like the tenth time.

But I think you can see where I’m going with this.
