Mitch McConnell knows what he is doing. He said the Senate trial would start 1pm on Jan 20th (trial can take place even though Trump is already out of office). Most of the Republicans won't show, so Trump will be impeached with all the Democrats and only a few of the Republicans present. The goal is to then immediately vote to prevent Trump from ever running for office again, which many Republicans with 2024 presidential hopes would more than welcome. Incitement to insurrection is the reason.
